Welcoming young tourists in Ollomont
Riduci

The recent touristic history of Valpelline is featured by the great willingness towards youth tourism. In the 1980s a large number of campsites and hostels received groups of teenagers coming mainly from Belgium and France. Italy also provided a great number of guest, especially in the hostels. Why did these groups choose Valpelline? On the one side the location is perfect for nature and health and, on the other side, the context where young people were welcomed was without risks or social perturbations. So, in the evening there were no problems with drink or other bad behavior: for tutors a quiet environment to discover nature while staying relaxed. The situation has changed in recent years, perhaps because the prices and the cost of the organization in our region has grown too fast. We can also suppose that society is changing too, with less desire to stay in group, sharing the same tent or bedroom. Now something is changing again: the crisis is opening new perspectives for social tourism. It’s not only an issue concerning money but also a psychological  need. A lot of youngsters are now living in degraded urban situations where the respect for other people doesn’t exist. A holiday in the mountain, in groups, could be an exceptional occasion to discover both themselves and the pleasure to stay with other people of the same age. For Valpelline it is a great opportunity: to recoup the old vocation and to restart an interesting economic activity. Ollomont is one of the best sites for social tourism with a lot of space for camping and with some structures to welcome large groups of teenagers. One of the best ideas is to convert the ancient buildings used to lodge the miners, into an innovative hostel. The project is to welcome young clients to a “social village” equipped with a lot of facilities for sport and culture. The plus is given by the psychological support and by the quality of the animation. So, for the future, it is really important to find financial resources to realize the dream to come back to the past.
